Cenotaph for a Broken Object - 2002

Produced for the ´Expo 02´, Gardens of Violence, Morat, Switzerland

By day, the sculpture presents itself as an enigma: a simple glass cube has been placed in the middle of a garden. The work appears incongruous as the cube only displays fragments of broken glass and mirrors. At night a highly powered spot light is directed onto the cube and gives the solution to this enigma. A few metres away a realistic image of a gigantic shoe appears on a wall; this is the virtual reconstruction of the shattered object displayed inside the cube. Like a reversed cubist act (or aporia), the image of the object comes to life only through the object´s own destruction.
