Cathodic Convertion - 2006

Commissioned for the festival 'Art dans les Chapelles'.
Photography: François Talairach

As one enters the St Gildas´ Chapel, Brittany, one catches sight of a rather unusual stained glass work with geometrical motifs in a perpetual mutation of colours. As we walk on a murmur intensifies and the ear is able to discern snippets of conversations, musical excerpts, slogans and the like. We soon get to identify that a wall of televisions switched to different channels sits right behind the perforated panel resembling an Arabic mashrabiy.

"In short-circuiting religion and television and designing this ´telestainedglass´, Chantal Melia and François Loriot make us experience for ourselves television´s overwhelming religious weight." Jean-Claude Pinson, Philosopher and Writer. Extract from the exhibition catalogue 'L´art dans les chapelles' - 2006
